Which Photos Create the Best Likeness in a Personalized Children's Book?

The photos you upload have a direct effect on how recognizable the child looks in the illustrations. You do not need a professional photo shoot or an expensive camera; recent smartphone pictures work very well. Lighting, angle and an unobstructed face matter much more.

Upload several different photos

Two to five recent pictures are ideal. One image shows the overall face shape, another adds profile information and a third captures the child's natural expression. Multiple references make permanent facial features clearer and reduce the influence of unusual lighting in a single photo.

The three most useful angles

1. Front view. The child looks roughly toward the camera, with the eyes, nose, mouth and chin clearly visible.
2. Three-quarter view. The head is turned by about 20–40 degrees, revealing the shape of the nose, cheeks and forehead.
3. Natural smile. This helps preserve the child's familiar expression, not just facial geometry.

Use soft natural light

A place beside a window or outdoors on an overcast day is ideal. The whole face should be evenly lit. A strong ceiling lamp creates deep shadows around the eyes, while direct sunlight makes children squint and changes their usual features.

What should you avoid?

• beauty filters that alter face shape, eyes or skin tone;
• social media masks and effects;
• sunglasses, large hats or hair covering the eyes;
• very dark, blurred or heavily compressed pictures;
• old photos if the child's appearance has already changed;
• group photos where the intended hero is unclear.

Do you need a full-length photo?

It can be useful as an extra reference, but a close portrait is much more important for facial likeness. The clothes in the original picture do not need to appear in the story. The illustrated hero receives one coherent outfit that belongs in the chosen world, while the photos guide facial identity.

Check each picture before uploading

Zoom in and ask three questions: can you see both eyes clearly, is half the face hidden by a strong shadow, and would you recognize the child without any context? If the answers are positive, the picture is a strong reference.
